Dear Parents,
I wanted to reach out because your child is in the very beginning stage of a major research paper, and I want you to be clear about the nature of the assignment so that you can help support your child through the process. The paper uncovers the implications of an “inciting event” (within the past 10-20 years) in shaping our current society. Our process has been to refer to that as the “rock” and the societal implications as “the ripples.” I am attaching a graphic using the Coronavirus as an example to illustrate this. The succession of images illustrates the rock with three ripples, then those 3 ripples subdivided to become what will be 6 body paragraphs. Students chose the “rock” and 3 ripples, and I met with each student to give them feedback / course corrections. This stage is important because if they fall behind or build a weak foundation, the rest of the project will be difficult and / or unsuccessful, and this is the biggest assignment of the semester. The week of March 9-13 students participated in a lesson taught by Mrs. Zonin, our Media Specialist, on using the NoodleTools platform and choosing sources from databases such as Opposing Viewpoints and Academic Search Premier (available through Mackinvia.com). Students were given access to computers the remainder of the week for collecting and reading sources and creating notecards for their paper using Noodletools. As you know, last week was filled with speculation and confusion about how school would proceed in the event of closure, and, because I was at home very ill myself, students did not receive their physical packets with more detailed organizers. Today, I have updated the class blog with all handouts, videos, screencasts, and due dates students need to transition to distance learning. Beginning tomorrow (Friday), they will continue collecting research and creating 18+ notecards by Tuesday, March 24th, next week they are using the research to fill out their organizers, and the next week they will type / edit / revise / submit their papers. Dates to be aware of (complete list of due dates on calendar below): Tuesday 3/24: 18+ Notecards created in NoodleTools Friday 3/27: Vocab quiz (online via vocabulary.com - unrelated to research, but I thought I’d throw that in- it was assigned over a week ago) Thursday 4/2: TIDIDE & Related organizers (posted on my blog) Thursday 4/10: Final Papers due (must be submitted to Turnitin.com prior to submission - instructions will be on blog) I understand this is an unprecedented time as we are all figuring out how to navigate school, work, home, and health, so please know I understand and will offer all the support I can as we find our "new normal" together. Wishing you all the best! Mrs. Nena Greene |
